As a treat, my mother and I used to go to Dunkin Donuts, buy bagels and coffee, and drive out the fish pier in Gloucester to eat our lunch.  When I said we both felt guilty about doing it so often, my sister commented that it was actually a cheap date, that Mum could have been wanting to go on cruises all the time.  This very un thrifty New Englander perspective wasn't something that had occurred to us.  Anyway, sometimes we'd see fishermen mending their nets.
