Across the lake is a yellow house. As I sit on the wet dock, huddled in my sweater, painting fast before the mizzle makes it across, I wonder... Do they have a cozy fire inside? They are too far for me to smell their woodsmoke, but that would feel good. Sagging old chairs demoted to camp life. Bookshelves crammed with generations of summer reading and nature guides. A ticking clock on the mantle piece bracketed by jars of wildflowers. Steaming mugs of something hot next to them. A haven from the gloom.
