This is a patch of typical coastal Maine spruce woods. Dark, mossy, here there be trolls woods. Red spruce, the particularly sharp and unfriendly kind. Its advantage is that its young spruces don't hang on to their shaded out and hence dead lower branches quite as hard as white spruce, so it is actually possible to walk in and find patches where the sunlight has gotten through, like this one.
